It does not matter if you smoke cigarettes, pipe or cigars; it does not even matter if all you do is sniff some tobacco snuff directly into your nostrils every once in a while; if you have been doing it for longer than a day, there is no question about the fact that you are hooked. That’s right, you are addicted to nicotine, which is why although you have heard so much about how harmful the habit is to you, and even though you are beginning to feel a few of those symptoms yourself, you can’t bring yourself to stop smoking” or sniffing.

Nicotine is an oily liquid substance found in tobacco leaves that acts as a stimulant and also contributes to smoking addiction. When extracted from the leaves, nicotine is colorless, but quickly turns brown when exposed to air. It has an acrid, burning taste, and is a very powerful poison that forms the base of many insecticides. You probably did not know that before you got addicted to the substance, did you? Funny, cigarettes contain only a small amount of the substance, and the flames destroy most of it, but what still gets into you is harmful enough to do damage to your body system and still get you hooked.

So how to break the habit?

Up until now, you must have thought you could do that easily and all by yourself, but you are probably reading this article because you have tried and you ended up back at doing two packs of cigarette a day. Not your fault, either. Nicotine binds with your red blood cells and promotes the flow of adrenalin. That is what makes you feel high when you smoke, so that when you try to abstain from the substance, you get irritable and anxious, and suddenly you are hungry but you can’t eat because of the headaches.

There are people who claim that they quit smoking cold turkey, and I believe them; but I think you should also consider a number of other stop smoking strategies that work. Various nicotine replacement products have been known to help a great deal and many Americans on smoking cessation programs are currently using either the nicotine patch or chewing on Nicorette, the nicotine gum. If those are not doing it for you, you could get a physician to write you a prescription for the nicotine spray. These products help you bid the tide of withdrawal from nicotine when the symptoms hit your twenty four to forty eight hours into the stop smoking program.

There aren’t many medical professionals that will not recommend support group therapy to help you break your smoking habit. There is nothing quite like talking to others like yourself and listening to them, drawing strength from each other’s failures and successes. It is definitely an improvement on facing the touch climb back to abstemiousness on your own. However, most professional also prefer to prescribe some form of medication to help you handle the stress you are sure to feel from time to time when you start to crave nicotine.

You should do everything you can to stop smoking today. If you have to merge all of these tips into one, you may as well go ahead with it. Just see that you get the approval of your doctor first.

There are people who actually are able to quit smoking on their own, but admittedly, there are only a few of them. Most other nicotine addicts find themselves always having to seek help from various quarters to break the habit. And that is not so strange either. With the level of addictiveness of the substance, a single exposure could hook you for life, and the craving for cigarette or cigar smoke can cause you to go back to the substance time and time again even as you try to abstain from it.

That is why all around you, there are various facilities and agencies that help with smoking cessation in various ways. If you need assistance with breaking the habit – and you know you do too – you should try to get in touch with any one of these stop smoking organizations and let them lend a helping hand to you., they are easy enough to find on the Internet.

The American Cancer Society, for instance, offers extensive information on the health issues that are related to tobacco use, on government regulations and the tobacco industry, tips on quitting smoking and tobacco use, and other such resources that are a great help. You can get similar information and tips from the CDC’s – Center for Disease Control’s – home page on the Internet. And there are countless ebooks online that do precisely that.

Getting help for smoking cessation however should not be limited to reading of various materials on the subject. You should take decisive steps too that could save your life. See a doctor, sing up with a psychotherapist, join a support group in person and on the Internet, and buy you any number of quit smoking aids that you can lay your hands on. There are physical and psychological aspects to nicotine addiction, and they all need to be addressed. If you have been trying to break the habit for very long, you may even have to sign yourself into a rehabilitation center or something. At least in there you can get all the attention you can get medically and therapeutically for your quit smoking effort.

Finally to manage the danger of relapse after you have succeeded in staying off of the habit for a while, you should keep in touch with your smoking cessation support group. Hearing from those who have tried and failed, and tried succeeded before helps you stay focused in its own way. However, being there to help other people who are trying to break the habit, to share your own stories with them and to help them with their own struggle is also very rewarding. You are not complete until you have both.

I will be the first to tell you that the craving for nicotine or tobacco never really does go away. Over time it lessens, but at any time that you let your guard down you could suddenly find yourself puffing away at another stick of cigarette again. For that reason, you really cannot be too carefree about the kind of help you get to break the habit because you may need it for as long as you live. You never should have started smoking in the first place”

There is hardly a surer way to break the smoking habit than to get some kind of support, especially from a professional. Walk in to speak with a doctor sometime; be sure it is not a friend, because you might be prone to disregarding their advice. And when they put you on a nicotine diet, stick with it. Soon you could be free from smoking altogether.

It helps to have someone you love and who loves you back; when you are working on quitting smoking, knowing that there is someone rooting for you all the way and patiently waiting for you to come out of it. It is one sure source to draw strength to overcome the addiction.

If you really want to quit smoking, get married to someone who cannot stand it. I tell you, Pal, you will have smoking out the door in one week flat. After a few rows and arguments, and a few times when they walk in on you with the stick between your lips, you’d never want to live through that again. And when your partner says they’ll never kiss you until they can do so without smelling the rancor, you’ll quit aright. I guarantee it.

Whatever you find to do, make sure it is not reading a book. I know some of them can be very engrossing, but I don’t think that they can keep your mind off of smoking for long enough. After a few minutes, the craving could become as bad as ever. You don’t want that, so you ought to be doing something a bit more involving? a bit more physical.

If you know of anyone who has fought and won the battle against cigarettes, you should contact them in your bid to win your own fight. Even the talk sessions can inspire you with the strength that you need to beat the rap; and putting to practice some of the suggestions that they offer you can be a great help.

I’ve been trying to quit smoking for the past five years, and each time I think I’m home, I found myself with another stick, smoking like my life depended on it. But that was until I met Doc Hailey; she gave me some words that I still cannot forget. Strangely, I’ve not lit another stick ever since. What you need is a doctor.

There are conventional and unconventional ways by which you can attempt to quit smoking. The best ways are simply the ones that agree with you the most. Some folks quit by getting into another habit, but most merely allow a doctor to help them. Which is your?

A lot of folks try for a lot of years to break their nicotine addiction, but many fail miserably because they are targeting their anger at the wrong thing. The enemy is not the cigarette that they smoke ? that is just the messenger, who has done quite a job delivering the message. The enemy is the nicotine, the substance in the drug that both hooks and kills. Learn to direct your actions in the direction that they are meant to go, and you will find much more success.

With the whole of your oral cavity infected by disease due to smoking, you might still be having trouble quitting. Already, you may have been given a death sentence but you cannot stop because your mind cannot leave it alone. You need a shrink.

Having tried all else, you have nothing to lose if they failed; the one last thing you are yet to try out might be hypnotism. A professional could help you program your mind to hate the cigarette and let go of it, and you need not be surprise that it works, because it does.

Addiction is in your mind, although it also begins to affect the physical organs of your body after long enough. Addiction to nicotine can be broken by sheer resolve, but that will not deal with the dependence of your organs on the drug. For that, you might need some medication.

There are a few pills that are known to help with quitting smoking. They do not actually do the job ? that you have to do by yourself ? what they do is that they heal your body. You are personally saddled with the healing of your mind.

I am of the personal belief that breaking an addiction takes both mental and physical effort. In the case of smoking, you have to first drag yourself mentally away from this disease that is killing you, and then physically too. Attempting to do it either way alone would lead to sure failure.

When your esophagus is infected due to smoking, one would have thought it would be easier to quit smoking. But with so many organs in your body also dependent on the narcotic, including your brain, you might find that that idea does not seem to be working. So, I would suggest you sign yourself up for rehab. A few weeks in there could change your life forever.

I’d bet it’s easier said than done, you know; it’s not like you could just make an announcement that stops everyone in your neighborhood from smoking, especially those kids around the block. You know the health hazards that are associated with smoking, and they know it too; so why don’t they just stop? All the evidence points to it and various releases by medical professionals and research institutes prove overwhelmingly that Environmental Tobacco Smoke, ETS, is every bit as dangerous as the very smoke that you inhale directly from the cigarette.

They don’t usually do it anymore on most American television stations, but I hear that is it still rampant in third world countries: the announcement that ’smokers are liable to die young.’ Right after every commercial that features a cigarette of some other brand of tobacco. Therefore, everybody knows it; it’s just that those little kids don’t care as much for their lives or those of others as others care for theirs.

So how do you stop inhaling environmental tobacco smoke? It’s not like you are going to end it all just because your life expectancy is low, and your chances of catching some kind of cancer or other disease are greatly increased. Well, I know how; at least I have a few tips that I will share with you in the hope of helping you deal with the problem that tobacco smoking poses to society today.

For starters, you can relocate. It may seem a bit harsh, but it is real; in any case, if you actually had some other disease or infection that was already killing you, and the doctor suggested that you moved out to some other areas where the environmental risk factors are reduced, you will not hesitate. Well, although it is not a sure fact that you will die or catch a disease as long as you continue breathing in ETS, you may regard it in the same light. You could try relocating to an area of the country where the risks are reduced. You have got to agree with me that that makes a lot of sense.

Well actually, the above is a bit of a chicken approach to dealing with the ETS problem; even if the alternative is not directly attacking the people around you who are smoking. However, you can attack the smoking problem head on by becoming something of an antismoking activist. Start small, if you like. Begin in your own home and insist that no one ever smokes in there; move on to your immediate surroundings and ensure you never eat in a diner where smoking is allowed. Move on to advocating that smoking be banned in the apartment complex you live in, and then set the neighborhood on the boys in the street corner.

After that, you now get to move on to the big time. If you like, you can campaign for a public office, or better still, you can draw close to someone who does. As soon as you have the power to do so, start to push to stop tobacco processing companies from polluting the environment with their product. A breakthrough some years back has greatly reduced their ability to perform, but you can push it all the way through. The final stop smoking victory may not be won in your time, but you would have set the pace for your children to live a healthier life than you did.

Perhaps you have wondered extensively at why everyone keeps telling you that you need to stop smoking, and you can’t seem to place it. Everywhere you turn these days, there are adverts and commercials encouraging you to stop smoking, and various publications and promotions on techniques to break the smoking habit; however you cannot seem to understand why something so soothing should warrant such elaborate quit smoking campaigns all across the country, and even the entire world. The next few lines should give you adequate reason to stop smoking so that you can finally be one of the few safe people.

Addiction – You may not understand this in a hurry, but it really is a very serious problem. Addiction is a state of psychological and physiological dependence on a potentially harmful drug, except that there is nothing potentially harmful about cigarette smoking. Tobacco smoking is downright detrimental in many ways that you will realize as you read on, but the addiction is something you really cannot afford to overlook. When you are addicted to a substance, your system suddenly cannot do without it, and this becomes a problem because the withdrawal symptoms from the substance when you are denied its pleasure are sometimes known to be fatal.

Carcinogenic – There are about 4000 different chemicals in tobacco that are inhaled along with the smoke into your lungs and about 43 of these chemicals are heavily carcinogenic. In the United States, smoking is one of the leading causes of cancer as smokers are at increased risk of cancers of the oral cavity, esophagus, bladder, kidney, pancreas and lungs. As a point of fact, smoking is the leading cause of cancer related deaths in America today, implying that you are almost certain to die or at least develop cancer if you continue to smoke.

Social Stigma – For as long as smoking has existed, there have been a lot of people who did not think much of it; however, the mid 1960s brought facts by the Surgeon General that smoking was a highly dangerous habit that has the propensity to adversely affect those caught in the habit. Since then, there has been a huge scramble by several people to quit smoking such that the figures of smokers in the United States have dropped by half today. Today, a lot of people find the habit of smoking tobacco extremely distasteful and treat smokers with repugnance. Several nations of the world have imposed heavy tariffs on tobacco, and most have also banned the habit in public places. Coupled with the acrid smell of tobacco smoke, you really don’t want to be on the receiving end of such ridicule, so you might as well stop smoking today.

Other Harmful Health Effects of Smoking – Smoking is known to result in a number of diseases as opposed to just cancers. It also causes severe coronary heart disease and chronic airway obstruction, increased risk of stroke, arteriosclerosis, and sudden infant death syndrome for kids born to women who smoke during pregnancy. Other respiratory conditions are known to be caused by smoking, and a number of diseases that make up a list longer than my arm. It’s like smoking is a one way ticket to death.

Loose Change – And on a lighter note, smoking is known to cause you to spend a lot more money than you absolutely need to. If you can break the smoking habit, you may be surprised that you suddenly have more free cash to do a lot of other important things with. Do yourself a favor; stop smoking today.

I don’t think a doctor is the best person to help you with quitting smoking, seeing as so many of them know the hazards but smoke also. I think the best way to quit is to find a person who has succeeded at it before. Their own stories might inspire yours.

With your life on the line, you should have no trouble quitting the nicotine. If you think you cannot ever quit, just wait until you get that doctor’s report telling you your neck drag might be your last. I have seen more than a few people get converted at that life turning point.

Nicotine is addictive; that is why so many people make claims all the time of trying to quit, but they never quite seem to succeed. To break the habit, you have to break the addiction. And to do that, you have to go about it the very same way you would break any other addiction? by following doctor’s orders.

Quitting the cigarette is no holiday because while you are trying, the darned thing is still holding on to you. I know of people who have nearly driven themselves crazy while trying their hands at it, and yet they failed. I’ll warn you now; you cannot stop smoking unless you dedicate your life to it.

The thing about addictions, they are not only in your body, but in your mind also. Breaking an addiction, especially to a substance like nicotine, you have to attack it both physically and psychologically. Anything short of that, and you’d only be wasting your time.

You must have come across folks who look miserable in everything they are doing, and when you ask them they say that they are trying to quit smoking. I charge you to look for them in a few days, and they’d probably be smoking more than they ever did before the attempt to quit. That’s because they were going about it the wrong way. You don’t want to go down that road, so read up first, and then get professional help.

Smoking, like drinking, is one thing you get yourself into but that you cannot get yourself out of. You need professional help, like from a shrink or a medical doctor or something. Since they understand how the habit has gotten to your brain and to your mind, they will have the tips that will help you.

Do not hesitate to share every experience with the person trying to help you kick the smoking habit. Anything that you hold back might influence their judgment adversely, so that you don’t get the advice that you really need to get. Quitting smoking is serious business, and you have to treat it as such.

Hanging around people who smoke is a sure way to get back into the habit. How about you change your friends, especially if they are not as interested in quitting as you are? Spend more time around people with healthier habits, and reorient your mind, will you?

When that monster rears its ugly head again, kick it in with a bout of something else that you love to do; something that will take your mind away to something else. The urge to smoke will surely come back another time, but just go on ahead and do the same thing all over again. That is the best way to deal with the urge.

You got yourself into smoking, you can get yourself out; but don’t go thinking that it is a piece of cake, because it isn’t. You will have to change a whole lot of your daily living habits if you are looking to make it stick, otherwise the feelings will come rushing back, and this time you might not be able to resist it.

If you feel like smoking, you could say some encouraging words to yourself, and then simply refuse to pick up the stick. This takes a bit of conscious effort, but it works. Some doctors might even suggest that if you still were thinking about it in 30 minutes, then go get it? It means that that technique is not working and you need another one.

Deal with a nicotine craving by finding another interest, an engaging one. It is important that what you decide to do does not continue to remind you of the cigarette. If it does, you could just as well be wasting your time because it is only then a matter of time before you subconsciously light another stick and take a few drags.

Cigarette smoking can be dealt with by abstinence. Now this abstinence has got to come from your mind and not somewhere else. Think about it and say no to the urge to smoke every time the need crops up within you. You can get to the point where the feeling eventually stops, but it is quite some journey, so prepare for it.

The same way you would deal with drinking, you have to handle smoking like it is a disease. Some physicians may even suggest some medications that you may take, or even incarceration. If it will keep you from smoking long enough for the urge to wane, it is worth it.

Have you thought of doing a puzzle? Yeah right, a puzzle? These things are so engaging that you might find it hard to do that and think of smoking at the same time. Do the puzzles every time you feel like taking a couple of drags on a stick of cigarette, and maybe the urges will stop.

You may know them already, but if you don’t, then it is high time you were informed on the negative health effects of tobacco smoking. They are why there is such a large campaign against smoking and smokers in the country, and why even though a lot of people still smoke as it were, most of them are not excited about showing their faces out there and flaunting the habit; it is why virtually every smoker on the planet is trying to quit smoking today.

Below you will see a few scary statistics that will convince you that tobacco smoking is not for you and you need to quit already before you end up like” like Humphrey Bogart.

You perhaps never knew that up to 442,000 people die from illnesses caused by cigarette smoking each year in the United States alone. As for people who suffer from lung cancer specifically, smoking accounts for nearly 90 percent of deaths. Other cancers are caused or greatly worsened by the presence of carcinogens from tobacco smoke and its chemical constituents, such as cancers of the larynx and oral cavity, the esophagus, bladder, kidney, and pancreatic melanoma. Cigarette smoke also contains some tar which is absorbed by lung cells, causing them to die, and which damage the cilia in your upper airways, leaving you exposed to infection.

Nicotine in tobacco causes arteries to constrict, lowering skin temperature and reducing blood flow to your hands and feet. This causes a rise in your blood carbon monoxide content that deprives the body of oxygen, binds to your red blood cells and forces your heart to pump more blood through the body. Rather than being helpful, the effect of this phenomenon is negative because it is often what results in many cardiac infections and diseases that stem from smoking, especially coronary heart disease or chronic airway obstruction that often culminate in death.

For more reasons to stop smoking, the habit also increases your risk of stroke by 50 percent, and causes both birth defects for children born to mothers who smoke during pregnancy, and increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome. Cigarette smoking destroys an important brain enzyme known as monoamine oxidase B (MAO B), which is vital for breaking down excess dopamine in your system. Without this enzyme, the dopamine neurotransmitter that triggers pleasure-seeking behavior is over secreted and you end up craving cigarettes more.

Worse, it doesn’t end with just you; even people around you who do not smoke are at risk from the effects of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) that you release into the atmosphere when you exhale. Basically, the chemicals that come out are the same as the ones you breathe in, so that your loved ones could die too. Your secondhand smoke can aggravate asthma, pneumonia, and bronchitis, and impair blood circulation.

There is no need to speak too extensively about it – you need to stop smoking already; otherwise not just you, but your loved ones also could die very painful deaths from complications that arise from your bad habit.

You know you could go for a walk or ride your bike around the block when you find that you feel like smoking. Just do something to keep you busy and your mind engaged. Sooner than you know it, the urges will get fewer and further apart.

I have quit smoking before, and then relapsed. Now I have quit again, and I’m still going strong with years under my belt. And all I did was walk away from it. You could too, if you wanted it bad enough.

People who find it difficult to keep off of the cigarette do not really desire to. Of course, they are addicted, but if they got themselves to a place where they couldn’t reach a cigarette easily, it might work for them. By the time the return to civilization, the thought of it could be repulsive to them.

If you really want to quit smoking, you can start by doing anything you can think just to put your mind in another place, away from the destructive thoughts. Thankfully the withdrawal symptoms of nicotine aren’t as violent as a few others that are known. Keep that up long enough and you might not want another cigarette in your life.

Doing something physical has been known to help a lot of folks break their smoking habits. If you know of something recreational that you can do, then do it. If you don’t know of one, find it. There is no going too far when you are trying to break a habit like that.

Addiction to smoking is a craving that you can do well without. Find something else, perhaps not a craving but something engaging to do, whenever you are feeling pressed for the stick. You might be surprised at the results that you get.

Sometimes, chewing on gum can help to occupy you when you feel like smoking, at least until the urge passes away. After a while of doing that, the urges might not come so frequently anymore, and you would have broken the habit.

One of the most clear and present dangers for smokers trying to quit is relapsing. You could have gone completely without smoking for weeks, months even, but if you suddenly gave in to the urge again, you could find yourself worse off than before. So, try to quit first, and then try not to go back to it.
